BREEZE HOUSE
The client is a steadycam operator for Hollywood blockbusters who is also a serious surfer. He approached his neighbor on the Canals, architect Whitney Sander, because he liked the architect’s own house. He wanted Sander to remodel his non-descript 50's duplex as he badly needed more space and wanted a master bedroom suite.
The client loved the architect’s suggestion to create a wall of blue glass on the Canal Side that cantilevered over a small pond. The metaphor of water, and even wave, in the way the wall of glass offset to one side as it rose up from the pond felt just right.
It was a great collaboration between the surfer and the architect: Sander suggested the blue wall, the client suggested the pond slide under the cantilever.
The client also appreciated the triple sliding doors set into each floor of the blue glass. These doors allow the front wall to open to the canal view and fresh breezes – a complete change from the claustrophobia of the old duplex.
Total square footage: 3,000 sf finished project (up from 2,400sf of the original duplex.)
Materials: bamboo flooring, blue high insulating solarban glass, Fleetwood doors with monster rollers, maple cabinetry, mini subway tile and mosaic tile.
